State and Local HIV Statistical Data
As of December 2007, 17,394 persons have been reported living with HIV infection (including AIDS) 2113 are residents of Trident District, representing 14% of the state's total. This is an increase from last year of 59 individuals. Of these, 1503 are men, 610 are women. Most persons (1350) are ages 25 - 49; 25 are children and teenagers under 20 years.
There are an estimated 805 persons who are newly diagnosed with HIV, including AIDS, each year in South Carolina. As with new infections, African Americans are disproportionately impacted. Most (43%) of the persons living with HIV in Trident area are African American men, 23% are African American women, 25% are white men and 5% are white women. Three percent of persons living HIV are Hispanic/Latino.
The greatest proportion of persons living with HIV who reported risks are men who have sex with men (43%); 34% are men and women exposed through heterosexual sex; 21% are injecting drug users.
Hispanic/Latinos make up about 3% of the population of the Trident health district. Among persons recently diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in the Lowcountry, 5% are Hispanics/Latinos.
