Medical Case Management

In order to carry out our mission, Lowcountry AIDS Services uses a case management model for working with those we serve. Case management is a process by which staff works with clients to develop individualized service plans for how clients will manage multiple aspects of HIV disease whether that be psychosocial, financial or medically related. The goal is for clients to become as self-sufficient as possible, live with dignity and to ensure they have a good support system.

The intake assessment is a comprehensive tool that will assess the client’s overall needs, including financial needs, assistance with rent or utilities and medical treatment or medications. Most clients have diverse needs and all are addressed during the assessment interview. All clients are educated about their disease, risk management, medical and medication compliance. All clients are also given a nutritional assessment and an appointment with the nutritional counselor. Clients may be given referrals to medical care, substance abuse counseling and financial management as needed.

Case management staff uses supportive services to assist clients with the completion of their service plans. Supportive services include risk management counseling, support groups, housing assistance, legal assistance, financial management, food and nutritional support/education, medication adherence, and volunteer services. Weekly support groups are offered as a way for clients to increase personal well-being.

The most important part of the case manager/client collaboration is mutual respect, trust and a willingness to meet any challenges together. LAS case managers are compassionate, caring and hardworking; they are always willing to take that extra step for their clients and it shows in the number of success stories that are part of this agency’s history.

Lowcountry AIDS Services offers a range of services to those living with HIV and AIDS. Each year, we assist more than 2,000 individuals through our free testing, case management, prevention services and more.

All our services are free and confidential. Lowcountry AIDS Services does not share any information with other agencies without the written consent of its clients.

Client Support Groups

Living with HIV and AIDS can often feel lonely. Lowcountry AIDS Services offers support groups for its clients. The groups are completely confidential and facilitated by LAS case managers. All attending clients must contact their case manager for admission to the group.

Professional Education

Through workshops and seminars, Lowcountry AIDS Services provides education to human service and health care providers each year. We have several staff members available to speak to your organization or medical practice about HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and the impact on our local community.

Lowcountry AIDS Services offers free, confidential HIV/STD testing at our North Charleston office. HIV results can be delivered in 20 minutes. Testing hours are 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. No appointment necessary.

Legal Services

Lowcountry AIDS Services offers clients basic non-criminal legal services. Clients can meet with local attorneys, at no charge, to discuss a wide range of legal subjects, including wills, powers of attorney, landlord/tenant issues, health insurance and domestic legal issues.


Lowcountry AIDS Services is committed to all issues concerning individuals with HIV/AIDS in our community, state and around the globe. We will contact local, state and national legislators on AIDS-related issues. LAS also can act as a liaison with other community organizations in advocacy for people living with HIV/AIDS.


Housing assistance is provided on a case-by-case basis to low-income individuals for more stable housing. Housing information services include, but are not limited to, counseling, information and referral services to assist an eligible person to locate, acquire, finance and maintain housing. This may also include fair housing counseling for eligible persons who may encounter discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, familial status, or handicap.

Short-term rent and utility payments/deposits to prevent the homelessness of our clients.

Our Tenant Based Rental Assistance program, modeled after Section 8 assistance, provides a limited number of vouchers for individuals and families that are infected with or affected by HIV/AIDS with long-term rental assistance.

Financial Assistance

Lowcountry AIDS Services may provide limited funds for rent and utilities or emergency financial assistance for eligible people with HIV/AIDS (financial assessment required).

Lowcountry AIDS Services also offers a financial topics course to our clients. Money Smart for Adults is a FDIC instructor-led curriculum that consists of training modules covering basic financial topics. Topics include a description of deposit and credit services offered by financial institutions, choosing and maintaining a checking account, spending plans, the importance of saving, how to obtain and use credit effectively, and the basics of building or repairing credit. We also teach a couponing component in addition to the Money Smart Curriculum.

Nutritional Program

This program provides nutrition information specific to those living with HIV and AIDS. Lowcountry AIDS Services may provide limited food and nutritional supplements for qualified clients.

Our Nutrition Program provides our clients with nutrition education and an understanding of how good nutrition correlates with better health by using the Tufts University nutritional curriculum: Eat Up!: Nutrition Advice and Food Ideas for People Living with HIV and AIDS. The relationship between HIV and nutrition is multifaceted. HIV can cause or worsen malnutrition because of decreased food intake, increased energy requirements and poor nutrient absorption caused by pharmaceutical side effects.   Malnutrition in turn further weakens the immune system, increasing susceptibility to infections and worsening the disease’s impact. Clients can be provided with additional nutritional counseling sessions and nutritional resources (food, nutritional supplements and/or nutritional education) as needed.
